Save A Lot Experience

by Jenn on Nov.25, 2009, under Shopping Trip

I’d never been to a Save A Lot until today.

I don’t think I’ll go back anytime soon. It may just be the location I went to, but the store was unorganized, unclean, and uninviting. Some of the lights flickered. It reminded me of the stock grocery store in every low budget horror film. I wondered to myself while shopping if this store was a physical manifestation of low self esteem as a retail outlet. Yeah, it was that bad.

Save A Lot has some manufacturer’s coupons on their website, so I went specifically looking for some of those things. I couldn’t find them.

I didn’t see any major savings at Save A Lot. Most of the off brand items are loaded with trans fat. I actually found lard for sale there. I hadn’t seen that for sale in years! I was a little skeered of the off brands to be honest, so I tried to stick with brand name items. In fact, after I’d seen a “breakfast pack” with raw bacon, raw sausage and hash browns bundled up, I was totally disgusted by the meat department. I mean, the hash brown potatoes were on top of the raw bacon. No thank you.

I picked up bread from a local distributor, chocolate milk from a local farm group, dish washing sponges, apples from a local packager, i.e. things I recognized from coming semi-regularly off a truck. If it weren’t for the 25% savings off the top with the store coupon, I would have turned around and just left. My cheapness trumped my pride, however, so I went through with it.

I feel bad posting this, because I know some loyal SAL shoppers. I can’t figure out why because I really didn’t see any savings there that weren’t in line with what you can find at Meijer or Kroger, or even WalMart, even without using coupons.

Ever wonder why those supports have bumpers?

by Jenn on Nov.12, 2009, under Shopping Trip

I am 100% guilty of thumbing through my coupons and lists as I shop because I have this awful problem… I can study the ad, write down what I want to buy, go through the process of hunting down the coupons, even type it all out to share with others but the second I walk into the store, I forget what I came for!

So one day last week, this is what I was doing. I was perusing the coffee/tea aisle after loading up on all those cans of Maxwell House coffee, whilst driving the cart with my elbows, and flipping through coupons all at the same time. I don’t drive totally blind; I glance up from time to time to ensure I am not going to crash into some body, or display.

I heard the snicker behind me before I felt the impact:

In fact, for a split second before I crashed (hard) into the post, I knew I was going to but I just couldn’t stop, like some sort of dork magnetism was pulling me and I was powerless to stop it. A guy behind me obviously saw where I was headed before I knew. You know how ‘they’ say that you see your whole life flash before your eyes right before you die? Yeah, it happens with shopping carts and support poles too!

I hit the pole (hard).

It was a little piece of excitement on an otherwise dull day. I got to spend the rest of my shopping trip feeling stunned, embarrassed, and goofy all at the same time. Nothing beats breaking out into the giggles for no good reason, having someone ask, and getting to (legitimately) say, “Oh, nothing. I just crashed into this pole earlier.”

*Not actual photo. Simulation. No shopping carts, Meijer employees or boxes of tea were injured during the re-creation of this accident.
